Shoulder Impingement Surgery

Specialised Procedures to Relieve Shoulder Impingement, Reduce Pain, and Restore Mobility

Shoulder impingement occurs when the tendons or bursa in the shoulder become compressed during arm movement, leading to pain, inflammation, and restricted motion. This condition is often caused by repetitive movements or overuse and can significantly impact daily activities and quality of life. When non-surgical treatments, such as physiotherapy or injections, fail to alleviate symptoms, surgical options may be recommended to relieve impingement, reduce pain, and restore mobility.

Dr Antony Liddell performs several surgical procedures aimed at addressing shoulder impingement and restoring comfortable, functional movement:

BURSAL REMOVAL (BURSECTOMY)

The bursa is a fluid-filled sac that helps reduce friction between the shoulder tendons and bones. When it becomes inflamed due to impingement, it can cause significant pain. A bursectomy involves removing the inflamed bursa to create more space for shoulder movement and reduce discomfort.

DISTAL CLAVICLE EXCISION (DCE)

Shoulder impingement can sometimes be caused by the distal clavicle (the outer part of the collarbone) rubbing against the shoulder structures. Distal clavicle excision involves removing a small portion of the clavicle to reduce impingement and improve range of motion.

CAPSULAR RELEASE

In cases where shoulder impingement is associated with joint stiffness or frozen shoulder, capsular release may be performed. This procedure involves releasing tight portions of the shoulder joint capsule, allowing for greater freedom of movement and reducing pain caused by restricted motion.

Each of these procedures are designed to target the source of shoulder impingement and improve shoulder function. Dr. Liddell will work with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs, ensuring the best possible outcome.
